Power Book 3: Raising Kanan spoilers follow.
Note: This article also discusses some disturbing themes.
The first episode of Power Book III: Raising Kanan premiered last night on STARZ in the US and Starzplay via Amazon Prime Video in the UK, and we were finally introduced to Kanan's mum Raquel 'Raq' Thomas, played by Patina Miller.
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about her character, Miller said: "You really get to see what power means to Raquel... She's thinking about her legacy, she's thinking about how to finesse all the men, and she's not afraid of anyone."
With her take-no-shit attitude, we quickly saw how Raq was a force to be reckoned with in the series premiere. In episode one's opening scene, a very young Kanan took a beating by some local bullies, and mum Raq was not having it.
Raq popped some batteries in a sock and encouraged Kanan to go back and stand up for himself – which he did.
We then saw Raq head to Lanes Nightclub, the spot she wanted to use as a cover for her crew to sell drugs from. Here, she met Toni Deep (AnnaLynne McCord), who was reluctant to let Raq use the club for her illicit dealings.
In a bid to assert her power over Toni, Raq sent her a strong – and horrific – message by ordering the death (by microwave) of Toni's beloved pet pooch.
"I think there is nothing that this woman [Raq] has not seen," Miller told us. "They live in Southside, Jamaica, Queens, you know what I mean? There is nothing that she hasn't seen before.
"She ran with a really crazy crew and so she's seen a lot of things and she knows how to assert herself, but she tries to withhold the violence of it all, because she's a thinker.
"She always tries to figure out what can I [Raq] do to not do this. Like, 'how can I outsmart everyone else to not do it?'"
The one person that Raq seems to be unable to control however, is Kanan, who (spoiler) made the irreversible decision to shoot a member of Unique's (Joey Badass) crew – a choice that will clearly play out in the episodes to come.
On whether Raq can handle Unique and his crew, she explained: "There are some instances where one has to do what one has to do, and you get to watch Raq battle those decisions, and move and finesse, but she can absolutely handle it."
We'll have to wait and see just how the effects of Raq's and Kanan's decisions play out for their family and Unique's crew – and just how far they're willing to go as the Power spin-off show progresses.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan will air every Sunday on Starz in the US, and will be released simultaneously on Starzplay in the UK.
Power aired on Starz in the US, and is available on Netflix in the UK. Power Book II: Ghost aired on Starz in the US and streams on Starzplay, available through Amazon Prime Video, in the UK.
