Black Summer season 3 on Netflix: Release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

What happened to Rose and Anna?

Black Summer season 2 spoilers follow.

Black Summer was a ferocious hit for Netflix when it first dropped in 2019, but for a while there, news on season two was scarce. That all changed though when the (unofficial) Z Nation prequel was suddenly resurrected midway through June, 2021.

Now that season two is infecting all our tellies, it's time we look ahead to see what's coming next in this relentlessly horrifying apocalypse. So grab a shotgun, board up your houses, and join us here at Digital Spy as we take a look at what's happening with Black Summer season three.

Black Summer season 3 release date: When is it coming out?

Netflix has not yet officially renewed Black Summer for a third season, and that's frustrating to say the least given how season two ends.

However, Netflix did take its sweet time renewing Black Summer the first time round. If season three does end up happening, the earliest it will arrive is summer 2022. Two years passed between the last two seasons, but it's worth bearing in mind that the real-life pandemic definitely didn't help when it came to filming this fictional outbreak.

Black Summer season 3 cast: Who will be in it?

Characters come and go at an alarming rate in Black Summer, which is precisely why this show is so terrifying. However, the first two seasons did revolve primarily around four main characters:

  • Jaime King as Rose
  • Justin Chu Cary as Julius James (Spears)
  • Christine Lee as Ooh "Sun" Kyungsun
  • Kelsey Flower as Lance

Out of these four, Kelsey Flower only appears briefly in the very first episode of season two, and it doesn't look like he'll be back anytime soon. Justin Chu Cary’s character also ends up dying by the end of season two, so the only way he'll return is via flashbacks.

That leaves Jaime King, Christine Lee, and Zoe Marlett, who plays Rose's daughter, Anna. But even they may not return in a potential third season. Anything's possible in this show, and the end of season two left Rose and Anna in a very ambiguous way.

Black Summer season 3 plot: What will the second season be about?

Sun was the only one who made it to the plane in Black Summer's season two finale. Thankfully, the Korean-speaking pilot seems quite nice too, but where are they heading? Will things be safe for them when they eventually land? Given Sun's popularity with fans, we would be surprised if her story isn't developed further in season three.

So that leaves Rose and Anna. They didn't make it to the plane, and in fact, we don't even know if they're still alive. Anna went back to retrieve her mum who was left wounded on the ground, but then she ended up hijacking a car. Does she drive the car off without Rose?

The season two finale deliberately leaves things up in the air, which might encourage Netflix to renew the show if fan demand is strong enough. Or perhaps there's another plan altogether. Given that Black Summer isn't overly invested in its characters beyond Rose, Anna and Sun, it's entirely possible that season three might reboot things entirely with a whole new cast, American Horror Story-style.

Black Summer season 3 trailer: When can we see a Netflix promo?

Unless the zombie apocalypse happens for real, look out for Black Summer season three footage as soon as it's available right here. So possibly midway through 2022 at the very earliest.

Black Summer season 2 is now available to stream on Netflix.
