Strictly's Katie McGlynn tells Maura Higgins not to worry about Giovanni Pernice during new series

"I would never get involved with anyone that had a girlfriend."

Strictly Come Dancing's Katie McGlynn has weighed in on the so-called Strictly curse – and put to bed any chance of a budding romance between her and one of the professional dancers.

Former Coronation Street star Katie – who now appears in fellow soap Hollyoaks – spoke to The Sun about past reports linking her and Strictly pro Giovanni Pernice, admitting that she doesn't "really know him".

"Giovanni is a really nice guy but I don't really know him," Katie explained, before promising Giovanni's current girlfriend Maura Higgins that there is "nothing to worry about" as the 2021 cast get ready for the series.

"We're on perfectly good terms but Maura has nothing to worry about," she said of the Love Island favourite. "I would never get involved with anyone that had a girlfriend."

Katie continued: "I understand that happens but I'd avoid that like the plague. If someone has a partner, they are completely off-limits. I never want to be that person.

"The amount of heartache the other person would be going through – it's just really not nice and I'm not about that."

Revealing her commitment to doing well on the show, rather than finding love, the Strictly hopeful added: "I think it's fantastic when people find love on Strictly, it's such a lovely story, but I don't want that. I don't want anything to distract me from dancing."

As for rumours that Katie and Giovanni may be partnered up for the competition, the soap star said that she'd like any speculation to "die down".

Fortunately, said speculation is likely to fizzle out in the coming weeks, as the new series gets under way.

While fans eagerly await a formal return to the Strictly dancefloor, the BBC One series recently unveiled new pictures of the full line-up for 2021, complete with spray tans and sequins.

Strictly Come Dancing 2021's launch show airs at 7.45pm this Saturday (September 18) on BBC One.
