Love Island will welcome LGBTQ+ singles for 2021 series

The only criteria is that applicants are "over 18, single and looking for love".

Love Island will be returning this summer after sitting last summer out due to COVID, and it seems there may be more changes beyond just pandemic-related – with the show now encouraging LGBTQ+ applicants.

Men and women who identify as gay on Tinder have noticed adverts inviting them to apply for the ITV2 show, despite producer Richard Cowles stating in 2018 that "you need everyone to fancy everyone, so if you have gay and heterosexual in the same place, they're not going to fancy each other".

While the series has featured bisexual Islanders before, and with Cowles saying that he'd be interested in a separate "gay version", it looks like the upcoming series might indeed feature a mixture.

In a statement to the Daily Star following reports of the Tinder adverts, ITV said: "Our only stipulation for applicants on Love Island is that they are over 18, single and looking for love."

It will be interesting to see if the upcoming series does follow through on featuring people who aren't just heterosexual or bisexual, having been criticised in the past for not including them.

And while some might wonder whether the adverts are looking to cast for a separate LGBTQ+ series, ITV has stated that it is focusing on just the one summer series for 2021.

Love Island will return this year – although it doesn't have an air date just yet.

Love Island is available via catch-up on ITV Hub.
