Love Island USA season 2 spoilers follow – including the results of the final.
Just when we thought we'd be missing out last summer, Love Island USA came along to put all its eggs in our basket and really get to know us.
Making a few format switch-ups to ensure it could go ahead despite the pandemic (it ditched the traditional 'island' in favour of a neon-lit rooftop in Las Vegas), the second season of the US reality dating show aired in the UK just a little bit behind its Stateside broadcast.
As a result, we became entirely invested in the Love Island USA couples.
So, thanks to the wonders of the world wide web, here's the very latest updates on your 2020 US Islanders:
Justine and Caleb
The King and Queen of the villa, Justine and Caleb won over the hearts of the American public and the British fans alike.
After a shaky start on the show (Justine was an OG girl that entered on day one), she eventually found exactly what she had been looking for in Caleb. Thankfully, he was just as smitten (despite being coupled-up with Justine's villa BFF at the time) and once they'd picked one another officially, their relationship just kept going from strength to strength.
In a historic finale, Justine and Caleb became the first Black couple to win the show across the US, UK and Australian versions.
After being crowned the nation's favourite reality TV couple, they spent a little bit of time together in Vegas away from the cameras. Justine was planning to move to LA to be closer to Caleb, but they didn't want to rush into anything.
For a while, they stayed very much in their love bubble, posting adorable selfies across each other's Instagram pages as well as thanking fans and viewers for their support.
In one post, Justine wrote the caption: "Never in my life have I been quite so humbled and honored by a single experience. While I had hoped to find love, I never expected that to include the love of not only an amazing man, but also the love of so many awe-inspiring people. I cannot begin to thank each and every one of you for the role that you played in changing my life forever! With that being said, I want nothing more than to fully experience the time of my life with the man of my dreams. While in the villa I fell in love with myself, my man, and my little chicken nugget..."
Sadly, it didn't last.
Three months after Love Island USA ended, the winning couple separated.
In an emotional Instagram statement, Justine wrote: "It's truly a strange feeling to be typing this out but I understand my reality is now having to share some aspects of my life with you all regardless of how private I'd like to remain at times.
"This is extremely difficult for me to express but out of respect for those of you who supported me, and rode for me, I want you to know that Caleb and I are no longer together.
"I do ask for time as I continue to go through the process of heartbreak and healing as this has all been very hard for me. I cannot thank you all enough for the love and support to this point and I hope that it may continue as we move forward as individuals."
Caleb later shared his own statement which, in part, wished Justine "the absolute best and much continued success".
"This announcement has been one that we have wrestled with for some time now," he also said. "Not knowing exactly when or how to deliver it. The nature in which we met and fell for each other comes with a unique set of of obstacles that nothing in life can ever prepare you for."
Cely and Johnny
It's not much of a surprise that Johnny and Cely were voted into second place in the Love Island USA final.
They had been pretty solid from the moment of their initial coupling (let's not mention Casa Amor), making things official and dropping the L-bomb during their time in the villa.
After the show Cely confirmed that they were still together despite currently living in opposite ends of the country, telling her Instagram followers: "Y'all long distance sucks lol but Johnny boy and I made each other r&b playlists to listen to and it's been getting me through the separation anxiety..."
Johnny also launched a YouTube channel, sharing a Q&A video where he revealed that the distance was "tough" but that they were still "moving forward with each other".
Johnny also revealed that he was about to be moving to LA permanently, with two of his best friends and his sister, and that Cely would also be living in LA.
"At that point we're going to be able to explore our relationship on the outside," Johnny said. "Very excited for that!"
But in January, it was confirmed that Johnny and Cely were no longer together.
"Because you've all been such a close part of our relationship, I wanted to share with you that Johnny and I are no longer together," Cely wrote on Twitter.
"While our relationship has been public from the start, I do ask that you respect this decision and our privacy during this time.
"There is no reason to speculate, I am so thankful for our time together, but now it's simply time for each of our to focus on our own personal journey..."
Johnny shared her statement along with the words "all love", before thanking Cely for their time together. "I will forever cherish the fun we had, the laughs we shared, and the memories we created," he said.
Moira and Calvin
Like Moira herself, we'd pretty much given up on the idea of seeing her find a romantic connection on the show.
But then (in Calvin's words), she and Calvin picked their book up again – this time, on the same page – and it all slotted right into place.
The pair made it to third place in the viewers' vote, and they were posting post-villa updates for fans after leaving the villa. Moira and Calvin seemed to share a few nights out in Vegas following the final, but two months later Moira then confirmed that she was single on Instagram.
Opening up about their relationship not working out, Moira told People: "I really wanted to try and make our 'situationship' work. To be honest, the time we had in the villa really wasn't long enough — maybe like, two weeks or even less — to build a foundation for a relationship on the outside."
"We just got too busy, our schedules didn't match up, and the distance between us didn't help either," she continued. "It was neither of our faults, life just got in the way. I was sad about it of course, because I thought we might be able to make something happen, but we just had to make a realistic decision and move forward. We decided it would only be fair to ourselves to call it quits and go our separate ways."
Carrington and Laurel
For a moment, it looked as though Carrington could have been heading towards the final with new girl Lakeyn, but in a tense recoupling he decided to stick by his former flame Laurel.
The couple put the drama firmly behind them, even getting the blessing of Laurel's family, and eventually landed fourth place in the public vote.
These two were always going to have to deal with long distance, and in a post-show Instagram caption, Laurel revealed that "the 'I miss yous' have already started" so it sounded very much like they were going to give things a good go on the outside.
Speculation soon started as to whether or not they were together, as neither of them posted anything about the other and they seemed to be leading separate lives.
During an Instagram Live with co-star Johnny, Carrington responded to fans who were disappointed that they were no longer seeing each other (via Screenrant).
"We were talking, right? We weren't boyfriend and girlfriend," he said. "And that's fine, we knew each other for two and a half weeks out of the show. We gave it an honest effort and it didn't work."
He also shared a message of support for Laurel.
Connor and Mackenzie
Mackenzie and Connor coupled up on day one, and quickly fell into a very serious relationship (by Love Island standards, anyway).
It seemed as though Connor might have been having a few doubts, particularly when new girl Lauren arrived to shake things up. She picked him for a date, leaving Mackenzie devastated, but Connor arrived back and stuck with her despite the temptation.
Enter, Casa Amor.
In quite a surprising turn of events, it was Mackenzie whose head turned towards new boy Jalen. Connor remained loyal to Mackenzie, and was left single when he arrived back to the main villa alone to find that she had re-coupled.
Jalen and Mackenzie didn't last very long but, before Connor and Mackenzie could rekindle things, she was swiftly voted off the show.
Connor coupled with Moira, but it never really turned romantic and she eventually ended up moving on with Calvin. As a result, Connor was dumped from the island and the very first thing he did after his exit was FaceTime Mackenzie.
In a post on Instagram, Mackenzie revealed: "Gus [her teddy] & I have been patiently waiting for him on the outside and we cannot wait to welcome him home! We have missed him SO much."
After that the pair seemed inseparable, sharing loved-up photos on each other's Instagram pages.
In March, the pair confirmed their split in a statement (via People). "Some of you have been wondering about us and our relationship, so we want to help you to understand where we are right now," they said.
"We are both young and in the early stages of our careers, and sadly those careers are keeping us in two different places. One of us is in Pittsburgh and the other is in Tucson, and neither one of us will be able to move anytime in the near future."
"So over the last couple of weeks we have started having some difficult conversations about our future. Ultimately we both realized that our lives are moving in different directions," Connor and Mackenzie added. "This was not a decision we took lightly. We both have so much love for each other and had hopes that we could make this work, but relationships are all about timing, and this is just not our time."
