Steve Coogan confirms future of Alan Partridge's BBC series This Time

Double the Partridge?

Alan Partridge's return to TV in This Time was nothing but trouble on-screen, but the BBC is ready to give him a second chance. (Third chance? Fourth chance?)

Steve Coogan and his collaborators Neil and Rob Gibbons brought Alan back to TV after more than a decade for This Time in 2019, as he disastrously subbed in on a One Show-style chat show alongside Susannah Fielding.

When Digital Spy exclusively chatted with Steve about the hilarious Audible Original podcast From the Oasthouse: The Alan Partridge Podcast — released in full from Thursday (September 3) — he shared an exciting update on Alan's TV future.

"We're in the middle of writing another series of This Time," he told us. "We're shooting at the end of the year. We're scrambling to get it together. It will be broadcast next spring, sometime."

Any long-time Partridge fans will appreciate how the medium and format for the character has perpetually evolved over the last 30 years — and the second series of This Time will be no different.

"We're trying to set ourselves a task of having the stuff on-screen [with the chat show] and then have a kind of parallel unseen story that we get glimpses of, this parallel narrative of what's going on in [Alan's] private life and Jennie, his co-presenter's, private life," Steve explained.

"And then, sort of, have those two things go parallel. We haven't quite realised where it goes but we want it to end up in a strange and unexpected place. That's all I can say.

"Then, after that, we're going to do some sort of documentary series… We'll definitely do a documentary series where Alan is on the road."

The only downside of this wealth of upcoming Alan content is that it sounds as if there are no plans for a sequel to Crash Bang Wallop! What a Video. At least there's a brilliant podcast to enjoy!
