Emmerdale aired some heartbreaking scenes tonight as the soap said goodbye to one of its longest-running characters when Lisa Dingle sadly passed away.
Viewers will know that Lisa (Jane Cox) has been diagnosed with a terminal heart condition but when she broke the news to her family earlier this month, Lisa explained that she had months left to live.
Tonight's (May 23) double bill focused on Lisa and Zak (Steve Halliwell) on their wedding day, which quickly went hilariously wrong as the bridal party were forced to chase some escaped pigs across the farm.
Despite keeping the congregation waiting, a filthy Lisa did eventually arrive fresh from tackling pigs to say her vows.
"I never stopped loving you, even when I thought you stopped loving me," Lisa told Zak. "I know I've got you forever, and you've got me. Even though my forever might not be very long anymore."
Unfortunately, the wedding then took a heartbreaking turn when an emotional Zak left the church after hearing Lisa's vows.
In the soap's second episode, Lisa quickly followed Zak outside where he admitted that he hadn't written his vows and couldn't find the words to respond to her own, but Lisa assured him that she loves him and that she was going to go back inside the church and marry him, because he asked and it "felt right".
Happily, Zak listened to Lisa and the two shared their vows in front of their family and friends once again – although Zak did choke up on saying "till death us do part".
"How could I have got this lucky twice?" he asked, before kissing the bride.
Later, at the wedding reception, Lisa vowed to have fun and encouraged all of her family to do the same too – "smilers can stay, and frowners can flipping well go somewhere else!" – and then Zak surprised Lisa by reuniting the Woolpackers, who sang 'Hillbilly Rock, Hillbilly Roll' in a brilliantly nostalgic throwback for longtime viewers:
Unfortunately, the day took a heartbreaking turn as Lisa decided to pop home to change out of her filthy wedding dress and pick up Zak's wedding present, promising to return soon.
But when Zak went to meet her to walk her back to the pub, he saw Lisa apparently having a nap on the sofa. While telling Monty all about how lucky he is to know Lisa, how he'll make every minute special for her and how much he loves her, he soon realised that Lisa has died.
"Oh no, this is too soon," Zak sobbed. "This is too soon, Lisa."
And viewers were right there along with him:
"I think it's better, really. I think it tells a complete story and there's a lot of people out there who are dealing with terminal illnesses," she told us.
"I know that when it was revealed on screen, there were a lot of people writing in who have also got this illness. They said: 'Thank goodness you're raising the issue.' So it tells the story properly I think.
"I could go to Spain for years or whatever, but I think it hopefully gives a truthful end to Lisa's story."
Emmerdale currently airs weekdays at 7pm, with an extra episode at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays on ITV.
